Gustav Klimt's The Kiss is one of the most recognisable works in Western art history, painted between 1907 and 1908 during the height of his celebrated Golden Phase. The composition shows two figures locked in an embrace, their forms dissolving into a richly gilded cascade of robes adorned with geometric and floral patterns. Klimt used real gold leaf in the original oil-on-canvas, and its shimmering influence is felt even in reproduction — the warm ochres, deep blacks, and intricate ornamental details create an atmosphere of total absorption between the two subjects.
