The French Champagne Ad by Pierre Bonnard is one of the most celebrated examples of late nineteenth-century commercial art, created in 1891 when the young Post-Impressionist painter was commissioned to design a lithographic advertisement for a Parisian champagne house. The composition is characteristic of Bonnard's early graphic work: bold flat areas of colour, sinuous Art Nouveau-inflected lines, and a lively, almost theatrical arrangement of figures. A fashionably dressed woman dominates the scene, her silhouette rendered with confident economy against warm, festive tones of gold and cream, while dashes of deep green and black anchor the palette. The mood is celebratory yet refined, carrying the energy of Belle Époque Paris in every line.
