Childhood No. 1 is one of Hilma af Klint's most quietly remarkable works, part of her pioneering series produced in the early twentieth century that predates much of what is conventionally credited as the birth of abstract painting. Af Klint worked with symbolic forms, organic shapes, and a muted yet luminous palette to explore themes of spiritual development, duality, and the stages of human life. This composition reflects her characteristic blend of biomorphic imagery and esoteric symbolism, rendered with a softness that feels both meditative and visionary.
