Woman Beside the Water is one of Matisse's characteristically bold explorations of colour and form, in which a female figure is placed against a landscape rendered in the vivid, non-naturalistic hues that defined the Fauvist movement. Rather than depicting the scene as observed, Matisse used pure, expressive colour to convey mood and sensation, layering warm tones against cool ones to create a composition that feels simultaneously tranquil and charged with energy.
