Zojoji Temple, Shiba is one of Hasui Kawase's most beloved woodblock compositions, capturing the temple's striking red gate and pagoda half-swallowed by falling snow. A solitary figure moves through the foreground, dwarfed by the architecture and the soft weight of a winter evening. The palette is spare and deliberate — cool whites and greys dissolve into the sky, while the deep vermillion of the temple structure holds its ground against the cold. Kawase produced this design in 1925 as part of his celebrated Travels to Historic Places series, and it remains one of the defining images of early twentieth-century shin-hanga printmaking: a style that blended Western light and atmosphere with the refined graphic language of the Japanese woodblock tradition.
