Thelonious Monk and Howard McGhee are captured here in a photograph taken at Minton's Playhouse in Harlem in 1947, one of the most storied venues in the history of American jazz. The image documents two towering figures of the bebop era in an unguarded moment, rendered in black and white with the grain, contrast, and atmosphere that defines mid-century documentary photography.
