Doves No. 2 is one of the most quietly radical works in Hilma af Klint's celebrated series of abstract paintings, produced in the early twentieth century decades before abstract art entered the mainstream. The composition centres on two interlocking forms rendered in contrasting halves — traditionally described as yin-yang-like forms in black and white — symbolising duality, union, and the meeting of opposites. Af Klint conceived this series as part of a deeply spiritual body of work she called The Paintings for the Temple, and she believed the world would not be ready to see them in her lifetime. That sense of quiet revelation still radiates from the image today.
