The Beach and the Falaise d'Amont is one of Claude Monet's celebrated studies of the Normandy coastline, capturing the dramatic chalk cliffs at Étretat with the loose, light-drenched brushwork that defines French Impressionism. Painted in the 1880s, it depicts the sweeping arc of the beach below the Falaise d'Amont arch, where fishing boats rest on the shingle and the sea and sky dissolve into one another in shifting tones of grey, blue, and pale gold. The composition balances the monumental cliff face against the open expanse of water, conveying both the raw scale of the landscape and the transient quality of coastal light that Monet pursued throughout his career.
