Kamisaka Sekka's Momoyogusa, meaning "A World of Things" or "Grasses of Forgetfulness," is one of the most treasured illustrated books in the history of Japanese decorative art. Published in 1909-1910, the floral compositions within it represent the pinnacle of the Rinpa school: bold, flowing forms rendered with luminous flat colour, graceful negative space, and an almost musical sense of rhythm across each image. The flowers depicted — whether chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, or seasonal botanicals — are abstracted just enough to feel modern yet remain deeply rooted in centuries of Japanese artistic tradition. Sekka studied under Kono Bairei and later travelled to Europe, where exposure to Art Nouveau design reinforced his already sophisticated eye for organic pattern and ornamental elegance.
