This print reproduces Le Cauchemar de l'Elephant Blanc, one of the paper cut-outs from Henri Matisse's celebrated Jazz series. Sweeping black curves anchor the composition, set against vivid yellow and striking red accents in the flat, graphic style Matisse developed once he began working directly with painted paper and scissors instead of a brush. The forms are abstract rather than literal, built for colour and rhythm more than realistic representation.
