Nature Morte au Purro is one of Matisse's characteristically exuberant still life compositions, in which everyday objects — a pitcher, fruits, and draped fabric — are transformed through his fearless use of colour and loose, confident brushwork. Painted during his Fauvist years, the work abandons naturalistic shading in favour of bold, singing tones that push each element forward with equal energy. The arrangement has no single focal point; instead the eye moves freely across the canvas, drawn by contrasts of warm and cool, saturated and muted. There is an almost musical quality to how the forms sit together, unhurried and abundant.
