Caryatid is one of Amedeo Modigliani's most celebrated recurring subjects, a monumental female figure rendered in his signature style of fluid contours, elongated forms, and compressed sculptural weight. Produced during his Paris years in the early twentieth century, these works drew directly from ancient Greek architectural figures while filtering them through the lens of African art, Cycladic sculpture, and European modernism. The composition is dense and powerful, the figure folded inward with arms raised as though bearing an unseen load, her form reduced to essential curves and earthy, warm tones that give the image an almost meditative gravity.
